Warren

I spin my cuff link mindlessly on the drive back to my building.

Dinner with Maria was successful. We spoke about the next steps and what it would look like for her if Baxley Tech acquired Syler Systems.

As someone who didn’t sign up to run a Fortune 500 company, I can completely understand Maria’s eagerness to off-load the company. I know it might seem as simple as hiring the right CEO to run it, but there’s more to it than that. She’s ready to retire and move to Paris to be near her only daughter.

“Evening, Martin.” I give him a half-hearted wave as I keep my head down and trudge toward the elevator.

As huge as this new deal might be with Syler Systems, I can’t get the pit in my stomach to go away after my night in Vegas with Savannah. I have no idea where we stand right now, but I’m dreading going to the office tomorrow morning, a feeling I’ve never experienced.

“Oh, Mr. Baxley, sir, someone left this for you.”

I look over to the front desk where Steve is holding up a brown envelope for me.

“Thank you, sir.” I take the envelope and tuck it under my arm as I enter the elevator and wave at the men again who both look at me with a perplexed look on their faces.

I feel lost, for the first time in probably my entire life. I don’t have an answer. In business, I’m always a step or two ahead; I know what my goals and plans are; I know what I need to execute to get there, and I do it. But with this—this thing with Savannah, I’m in uncharted waters and I’m sinking fast.

I toss the envelope onto my kitchen island and walk to the fridge to grab a bottle of water. I debate on if I should put myself through a second grueling workout of the day to get my mind right, but I settle on bringing the envelope with me to slump down on the couch to catch up on some baseball.

I flick through the sports channels, settling on one to catch the highlights of what I missed this week.

“Cubs lost? Shocking,” I mutter as I grab the envelope.

I flip it over and look for an address, but it’s unlabeled. The small metal prongs on the top are the only thing keeping it closed; there’s no actual seal on it. I flick the prongs open and slide my hand inside, pulling out the contents.

I blink rapidly, staring at the 8x11 black-and-white photographs in my hand. They don’t make sense. I rub my eyes and look closer. I shoot upright, bringing the photos closer to my face as I flick on the light on the end table, realizing they’re photos of Savannah and me.

“What the fu—”
